Grief and Loss Clinical Consultation Group
A space for therapists to engage with grief, deepen their capacity to support clients, and learn to use grief as a lens for therapeutic work.
Climate disasters. School shootings. Disconnection from community and self. Political turmoil. Loss of life, home, stability… The seemingly endless tragedy that we are facing day after day living in this modern world presents us with an enormous amount of grief. If you have lost a loved one, you may recognize a familiar, searing ache that is amplified with every news story of crisis. Clinicians and clients alike feel overwhelmed, burnt out, hopeless, panicked- perhaps not recognizing the feelings they are having as grief. In light of the recent tragic loss of life and community in the July 4th, 2025 floods in the Hill Country in Central Texas, our incredible local therapist community has witnessed a surge of support being offered: pro bono crisis services, workshops for increasing grief literacy, and support groups for grievers and helpers. As specialists here at Blue Note Psychotherapy, we knew from our combined years of working with trauma and grief that we needed to pause; to regulate; and to honor the grief reaction so that we could move into the grief response.
Our response is one of a long-term, big-picture framework. The crises of our modern life will, sadly, continue. Communally, we need a space to learn to walk with grief, to integrate it into not only our clinical conceptualizations, but into our worldview. We see grief as a lens through which we can understand the human experience. It is at once an existential concept and a tangible set of somatic responses; universal yet individual. Grief is an experience we all have, all will, and all are experiencing. It is a companion (often unwanted) throughout our lifespan- one that demands our acknowledgment over and over again. In the past few years, death cafes have popped up- spaces to actively engage with our understanding of death and loss. We have seen an increase in death doula services in addition to the immensely important clinical hospice work. There is increasing interest at-large for people to deepen their conceptualization of loss as we face an era of overwhelming grief.
The intention of the grief and loss consultation group is to welcome clinicians to utilize a regular, contained space to receive support as they learn to work with grief. We will operate as a typical consultation group in that we hope clinicians feel free to bring specific casework and questions. A therapist from Blue Note Psychotherapy will facilitate each group, offering clinical expertise and psychoeducation, as well as timekeeping to keep us on track. We also welcome clinicians to use this space to consider their own beliefs and conceptualizations about grief and loss, so they may develop insight in how they may be showing up in the room with clients in grief. We hope this space may offer a haven to practice clinical engagement with grief, while receiving expert support and compassionate care from clinicians who have learned to integrate grief into their worldview.
